"Gather, transform and serve! When done in the name of Jesus Christ, this is the spirit of Catholic Charities and of all who work in this cause, because it is the faithful following of the One who 'did not come to be served but to serve' (Mark 10:45)."
- Pope John Paul II - 1987
Catholic Charities helps more than 100,000 each year, and we could never accomplish this without the dedication of our volunteers. We offers a variety of volunteer opportunities both for individuals and for groups, for ongoing service and for one-time commitments, working with children, seniors and families.
If you would like to become a volunteer, please browse our list of Volunteer Opportunities for individuals and/or ideas for students and groups. Then, fill out our brief online Volunteer Application to let us know what kind of volunteer work interests you most. (If you are more comfortable with a written application, please contact our director of volunteer services to request a copy of the form.)
After you submit your online application, we will contact you to talk about your interests and skills and the opportunities that might best fit your talents, schedule, location, etc. Then your application will be sent to the agency or agencies that interest you, and they and you will decide together on your volunteer placement.
Each Catholic Charities agency has different expectations of its volunteers and different opportunities for service. Some agencies have special requirements of their volunteers, which may include:
1. Police record and child/elderly abuse record screenings for anyone working with or around children or senior adults in any capacity. The completion of the program on sexual abuse of minors called “Protecting God’s Children” also may be required.
2. Driving record check, valid driver’s license and proof of insurance for anyone transporting clients or conducting agency business while driving.
3. Tuberculin and/or other medical test(s) for anyone working with vulnerable or at-risk clients.
Initiation and maintenance of all screening tests are the responsibility of the agency in which the volunteer serves.
Volunteers are expected to share in agency policies of confidentiality. Agency client information must be held in strictest confidence and shared only with those who have authority in the agency.
