If he came to you as a stranger, would you take him in?
Matthew lost his job as a hospital concierge during in 2014. Unable to afford the rent on his apartment, he moved in with his sister, her husband, and their three children. When his brother-in-law was unexpectedly relocated to Kentucky, he suddenly found himself without a place to stay. As a last resort to stay warm, he sleeps in the emergency department waiting room of the same hospital where he used to work. A social worker on staff is concerned about Matthew, and has reached out to Catholic Charities for guidance.
If she came to you in need, would you help her?
When Tracy was 15, she started abusing prescription medication found in her mother’s medicine cabinet. Tracy’s boyfriend introduced her to heroin on her 17th birthday. After two years, she had hit rock bottom. She was arrested twice for drug possession. Tracy’s probation officer recommended that she contact Catholic Charities to start getting her life back on track. She has been clean for nine months and uses her sobriety as a platform to reach other young women struggling with addiction.
Did you know that last year we assisted more than 120,000 people in the St. Louis Region through our eight agencies? Since the beginning of Catholic Charities in 1912, we are proud to say we have not strayed from our mission of serving those in need. We have three overall goals: break the cycle of poverty, abuse and neglect; empower people to make permanent, healthy changes in their lives; and support people to lead self-sufficient, dignified lives.
